Public consultation for the potential Civic Square in Shawlands

Glasgow Taxis Ltd position;           GTL have been engaged in the consultation process and have taken the stance that there should be no  reduction in the allocated taxi provision. That this be done it is proposed that the current rank for six taxi at Langside Ave be reduced to four and that an additional rank for four taxis be  opened in the west carriageway of Kilmarnock Rd near to the current ‘Iceland’ shop and pedestrian crossing. This provides an additional two  spaces for taxis. It is also proposed that consideration be given to a  taxi rank facility or temporary rank in Moss Side Rd if developers plan to open a cinema at that location. GTL also requested that the plans to redevelop Langside Ave into a Civic Sq  allow for a feeder rank that can be utilised at peak times i.e. when the Shed and other night clubs/bars etc are  closing. The public consultation process is now made known and this information is provided for members information viz;

Two events at Langside Hall from 10.00am till 8.00pm on 24th September and 4th October from 10 till 6.00pm.

Since launching the Shawlands Town Centre Action Plan in 2012, Glasgow City Council and a range of partners, including Shawlands & Strathbungo Community Council and Shawlands Business Association have been working together to deliver a £3.3m programme of improvements in the centre.  Among a variety of projects delivered so far, are the unique ‘Shawlands Gate’ outdoor digital animation studio developed in collaboration with the students at Shawlands Academy in 2012 and last years designation of Shawlands Cross Conservation Area. In May 2014, the first phase of footway and lighting improvements on Kilmarnock Road was also completed to support of a more attractive restaurant and evening environment.

The Action Plan now proposes to create a new civic square for the Southside in front of Langside Hall which partners believe could form the exciting heart of the emerging Cultural Quarter of Shawlands.

As you may be aware the Pollokshaws Road/Langside Avenue junction at Shawlands Cross is a space that is already home to Langside Hall, the key civic building of the area, the Shed which has a long track record of club nights, live theatre, dance and craft events, Sweeney’s, a vital attraction for new song writers and Glad Café, a destination for experimental musicians, art and discussion which has drawn attention from The Guardian, Wire magazine and Shortlist as ‘a must visit’ for Glasgow.

The potential public space is to provide a key attraction on the gateway from and to the city centre and route to Scotland’s national football stadium at Hampden. A well designed space also has the potential to bring the Queens Park into the heart of the Shawlands town centre and attract more visitors to the Southside as a whole.

The Consultation is available online at ‘Shawlands Town Centre Action Plan’ or by simply copying the appended link into your search engine.  https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=10198  Hard copy consultations will also shortly be available in Langside Hall foyer, Shawlands Academy and local cafes.
