Glasgow Taxis Go Green!

New environmentally-friendly electric cab hits the city streets

Glasgow Taxis is going green, with the appearance of the first electric black cab on the city’s streets.

The revolutionary new vehicle is expected to prove popular with customers through fare savings, the introduction of power sockets and WiFI, as well as more space in the back, but the environment is also set to benefit thanks to the cab’s zero emissions output.

A back-up petrol generator allows the taxi a total range of up to 400 miles, including 80 miles of pure electric driving.

Glasgow Taxis Vice Chairman, Jack Ferguson, has welcomed its arrival into the company’s 800-strong fleet.

He said: “We’re always looking to find ways to make our taxis more comfortable for our passengers but in a way that also helps the environment. We’re pleased that the first electric cab is now on the road. We hope now that some financial assistance will be made available to our drivers to help make purchasing an electric taxi more viable for them.”

Gary Bowers is the first Glasgow Taxis driver to own an electric cab. Along with significantly lowered costs to the daily running of his taxi, Gary has noticed his passengers have been enjoying the change.

The bigger taxi – thought to be the first in Scotland – holds up to six passengers with easy wheelchair access, while power sockets for laptops, USB ports and WiFi help them stay connected on the move.

Gary said: “It’s been a real pleasure owning the first electric taxi in Glasgow and I’ve enjoyed test-driving it across the city. My passengers seem to like it, too, so hopefully this will become the future for Glasgow.”
